Barton County Historical Society and Museum - Great Bend, Kansas Barton County Historical Society and Museum in Great Bend, Kansas collects and exhibits the Heritage of Barton County Kansas. The main building of the large museum didn't take very long for us to tour, but the many other buildings had more to offer. There are several buildings where larger items such as tracker, motor vehicles and even an airplane are exhibited as well as the 1873 Dodge House, 1898 St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 1899 District 50 school house, 1910 Belpre Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Depot and 1871 Castleton Post Office. I am a big fan of old painted advertising theater drapes and the Barton County Museum has the largest collection I have ever seen on display (6). Even better they are displayed without being blocked by all sorts of other items (which happens at many museums). The centerpiece of the Village portion of the museum is probably the "Lustron House," a prefabricated enameled steel house developed following World War II. 38 of these prefab homes were built in 1049-1950. Fewer than 2,300 were built nationwide. Call to confirm the museum will be open as scheduled before visiting.
