The Great Plains Transportation Museum has a great location in the Old Town section of Wichita, Kansas, with tracks and an large old steam engine extending over a main street. I'm not sure why "railroad" or "train" isn't in the name of the museum, because railroads are what the museum is all about and it seems like their are more people who would be interested in trains than "transportation." The museum is operated by the Wichita Chapter  of the National Railway Historical Society

The Transportation Museum includes a gift shop and one room museum, plus about 13 old engines and other railroad cars outside. Visitors can climb around many of the locomotives and rolling stock, but most of the railroad engines and cars aren't in very good condition and there are few labels to tell a visitor what they are seeing. Unless you are a real railroad buff, I think your visit to the museum would take less than 45 minutes.

I believe that the Great Plains Transportation Museum would be more interesting if they gave regular guided tours. Group tours can be arranged during normal hours or by appointment.
