Haun Museum - Jetmore, Kansas The Haun Museum in Jetmore, Kansas was organized in 1965. There is a small complex of native stone buildings and a building in back which doubles as storage and a gallery for larger items such as early wheeled fire equipment. Large portions of the collection will mainly be of interest to folks with a community connection, but other interesting stories told by the museum include the death of Morton the elephant, who killed his trainer while in Jetmore in 1911 and was destroyed by using a train engine pulling to break his neck. The museum also has a copy of the only known photo of A.E. Hunt's Rotary Aeroplane, an early helicopter built in Jetmore in 1910. Hunt was the Jetmore blacksmith who designed and built the helicopter. It was all metal and weighed more than the craft could lift. The museum produces and sells annual calendars with historic photos of Jetmore and Hodgeman County. It is also a source of local genealogy information and occasionally hosts regional history presentations. Although museum hours are limited to summer weekends, they were happy to schedule an appointment and two members of the museum board met me on a weekday afternoon to show me their collection.
