Richard Howe House & Welsh Farmstead - Emporia, Kansas The earliest parts of the Richard Howe House & Welsh Farmstead in Emporia, Kansas were built in 1867. It was occupied by three generations of the Howe family, and turned over to the historical society (including all of its contents) when the last member of the family died in the 1990s. Presently it is only open by appointment using the form at the bottom of this page. Admission is free. The original owner was Richard Howe, a Welsh stonemason and first generation American who built the home with eighteen inch thick limestone walls, oak floors, black walnut woodwork and a large patio fireplace. The Howe House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. The property includes 15 acres, a barn with original farm implements & masonry equipment, a well and a stump of a 130 year old tree which was planted by Richard Howe, son of Richard and Sarah shortly after they moved into the house.
