Wyandot Barbeque - Kansas City, Kansas Wyandot Barbeque is a neighborhood BBQ restaurant located a few miles east of The Legends in Kansas City, Kansas. There were once three Wyandot Barbeque restaurants, but today there is only this original location which has been on State Avenue. It is named for the Wyandot people came to Kansas City in 1843 and lived here only a few years before being forcibly moved once more (this time to Oklahoma). Wyandot Barbeque does not get the press that many KC BBQ joints get. It isn't fancy, but has a very loyal customer base and a long history. It was opened in 1977 by Ron Williams. The Overland Park location operated from 1980 to 2023, but after Ron's death, his son Ron Williams II found two locations too much to manage. The meaty ribs are tender and have very good flavor. The brisket is a bit fatty, but one of my favorite Kansas City area briskets for flavor. The burnt ends are large junks and I enjoyed the fatty cubes of meat the most. I think of them as closer to smoked brisket than burnt ends. The presentation of the dishes is rather plain and I recommend ordering the meat dry to avoid having it drenched in sauce. The sauce is a typical, ketchup based KC area style sauce, but is hotter than many sauces in Kansas City. It doesn't grab you on the first taste, but if you use much sauce, you have a pleasant, mild heat in your mouth by the end of the meal. The onion rings are not fresh made, but are still crispy and good. The previously frozen crinkle cut French fries are cooked perfectly. They are golden and crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. I like them better than the fresh cut fries at some other places. The beans are good, with thin slices of meat and diced onion & jalapeno. The slaw has little dressing and the flavor of celery predominated. The servings are larger than many places and the prices are lower. You can easily fill up for about $14. The $14.99 mixed plate has enough meat for 2 or 3 people. but they would probably want a second order of fries. Many of the sandwiches are priced under $6. The only sandwiches I have had are the sausage sandwich and hot link sandwich. They no longer have hot links. The sausage is served on good 8 inch buns. It isn't sauced and could probably use some. It was real good at home with some stone ground mustard. Slabs of ribs are sold by size from $18 - $24.99 depending on the weight of the slab.
