View from Wells Overlook - Lawrence, Kansas Wells Overlook County Park is an attractive scenic lookout point about 3 miles south of Lawrence, Kansas. The property was donated to Douglas County in 1971 by William Wells. The two story observation tower is on a hill and surrounded by a small park with a 1/4 mile nature trail, picnic area with tables and shelter. The Lawrence Journal World says it is possible to walk up to the tower from N.1000 Road after the gate is closed for the night, but implies that the park is not a good place to visit after hours. Wells Overlook is 3/4 mile east of US-59 on the south side of N. 1000 Road (County Route 458). The tower is not accessible and the trees originally blocked the view from the ground, but an ADA accessible look out called the Passerine Pavilion was added in 2021.
