Sisters of St. Joseph Nazareth Motherhouse - Concordia, Kansas

The Nazareth Motherhouse was built in Concordia, Kansas in 1903 by the Sisters of St. Joseph. The first Sisters of St. Joseph united in LePuy Fancy in 1650. The Sisters of St Joseph of Concordia were founded in Newton, Kansas in 1883 and moved to Concordia in 1884. At one time there were more than 600 Sisters, but today there are around 160 in the United States and Brazil.

Three story Stafford Hall was added to the back of the Motherhouse in 1970. It provides a residence for retired sisters and a swimming pool that is sharred with the community.

The Sisters of St. Joseph Sacred Heart Chapel was added to the Motherhouse in 1907.

which were created by the Munich Studio of Chicago
and brought to Concordia by train in 1907.

Nazareth Motherhouse has two small museums devoted to the history of Sisters of St. Joseph of Concordia, KS.

Relics and Reliquary

The hallways and rooms of Nazareth Motherhouse are lined with original artwork - much of
it created by the sisters of the order.

A large bird cage on the second floor of Stafford Hall has birds from Africa, India, Australia and China:
orange-cheek waxbill, rosy-rumped waxbills, zebra finches, tri-colored nuns, society finches,
gouldian finches, and the canary at the lower right.

Nazareth Gift Shop in Stafford Hall sells the handiwork of the Sisters of St. Joseph.
Open Tuesday - Thursday 9 AM - 4 PM, Friday 9 AM - noon, or by appointment.
