![]() The Rub Bar-B-Que - Olathe, Kansas The Rub Bar-B-Que in Olathe, Kansas is a great barbecue restaurant which should be much better known. I've been dining there since it first opened and although I miss the smoked meat loaf they served during the first few years, they still have many great meats. You order at the food preparation counter, reading the menu above. Your plate is prepared in front of you and when you get to the cash register, the food is ready for you to carry out or carry to your table. Fountain drinks are self serve in plastic cups, so I always leave with a full cup of pop. There is a second dining room in addition to the one shown in the photo below and this restaurant can accommodate large groups. Our most recent meal was in early 2025. Wanting to sample a large portion of their menu, we ordered a Ultimate Platter which for $29.99 includes 4 ribs, 1/3 lb. burnt ends, 1/3 lb. pulled pork, 1/3 lb. sausage with 3 sides. It is intended to serve 3-4 and we took over half of the meat home for later. At about the same prices as two platters, it is a nice meal for a small family. All of the meats were good. Neither of us are big pulled pork fans. There was moist and well flavored, but we liked the other meats more. The sausage is very well seasoned, among our favorites throughout Kansas City. The ribs have a great flavor from both rub and smoking, but I still like adding a little of their sauce. They are tender, with what I think is about the perfect amount of still clinging a little to the bones, rather than falling off. The burnt ends are less fatty than many places and do not have a smoke ring. Our sides were fresh cut fries, house made onion straws and BBQ pit beans. The fries are my favorite. The onion straws are good and I continue to get them, but I wish they were just a little less salty. The first time I had the beans and saw that they were a mix of three kinds of beans, I thought, "I'm not going to like this," but I was wrong. The beans are slightly sweet and very good! One of the newer dishes at The Rub is the Burnt End Burrito, which is made with beef burnt ends, potatoes, Jalapeño cheese and pico de gallo wrapped in a tortilla. It is a generous serving and quite tasty for only $12.99. It had a nice flavor from the seasonings and smoking and I enjoy it as served. It has just the right level of juiciness and it doesn't really need the salsa and sauce which come on the side. I like the burrito even better when the leftovers are reheated and topped with a little Sriracha. I've considered taking some Sriracha there with me. The $12.99 Fat Boy (Jumbo sausage and pork sandwich topped with Carolina slaw, homemade fries and buffalo hot sauce) is one of my favorite sandwiches at any Kansas City BBQ restaurant. The richly flavored sausage is the star of the sandwich. The only chicken offered is chopped chicken. This isn't the style of BBQ chicken I prefer, but it is still surprisingly good. The tomato based sauces are sweet with a little spicy. Although I am usually a fan of spicier sauce, I usually use the regular, most often to dip the fries. My only criticism is the plating isn't very attractive, but as long as they are filling the plates with such generous servings, its hard to complain.
