Öl Stuga - Lindsborg, Kansas Öl Stuga is a Swedish influenced bar which serves deli sandwiches in Lindsborg, Kansas. The words "Öl Stuga" mean beer cottage in Swedish. Customers thumbtack dollar bills to the ceiling to fund an annual graduation party for the seniors at nearby Bethany College. Owner Mark Lysell bought the bar in 1977 when he was 27 years old. You can watch the sandwiches being prepared at the of the bar near the front entrance. The most popular item is the "Brent Nelson" (sausage, BBQ sauce, smoky sharp cheese, hot pepper cheese & onions served on a warm bun). It was named for the customer they first prepared it for and in 2012 was a finalist for Good Morning America's "Best Bites Challenge: College Edition." It is a good sandwich, but so far my personal favorite is a German sausage made with sausage, Swiss cheese, Dijon mustard and sauerkraut on a submarine bun. I haven't cared as much for another popular sandwich, the Reuben, which has a very generous serving of thin sliced corned beef. The rye bread had a strong rye flavor, holding its own with the corned beef and their was enough cheese to balance them. There was only a little sauerkraut and I couldn't really taste the kraut. I probably would have enjoyed it more with sauce, but didn't learn until later that you have to request it. The most unusual dishes served at Öl Stuga are "trays" of smoked oyster, sardine and other items. On our 2nd visit I had the "Swedish Delicacy Tray" which has 7 oz. of pickled herring, accompanied by knacklebrot and bond-ost. Bond-ost is a mild Swedish cow's milk cheese which is aged only 6-8 weeks. Knacklebrot is a Swedish cracker usually eaten with toppings. This was the first pickled herring I have had in several years and I really enjoyed it. It was in a particularly sweet brine. The plain rippled potato chips served with the sandwiches mainly add crunch. I wish they would add some flavored potato chip options. Mikhail Gorbachev, former President of the Soviet Union, stopped at Öl Stuga while in town for an event at the Anatoly Karpov International School of Chess across the street. He drank vodka and cranberry juice and that cocktail is now named for him. Most sandwiches were $7.50 or less in 2021. 3 - 6 foot Submarine sandwiches are popular to take out and cost $12 tax per foot.
