Adobe House The prairie dogs are our favorite attraction at Prairie Dog State Park near Norton, Kansas, but there is also a one room school house, adobe house museum, camping, Sebelius Lake and a tiny 1870's cemetery. Hillman School is presently located just south of the the Prairie Dog State Park Area Office. They hope to relocate the school to near the Adobe House and operate them under a combined name of Norton Living History Museum. For years visitors viewed the interior from a cage, just inside the door, but they are starting to have programs for children there. The original desks were slabs of wood with pegs to hold them up. Tours available by apointment. The Adobe House is about a mile away and is believed to be the only original adobe structure being used as a museum in Kansas. It was constructed in 1892 and is still on its original location. It was restored and nicknamed "Our Lady of the Prairie" in 1998. A 1915 Monitor windmill has been erected behind the home. On the way between the two buildings we saw 30 or more prairie dogs and following the tour, we spent about a half hour photographing and watching at least twice that many. This was the highest concentration of easy to see prairie dogs that we have found in the wild.
