Salem Orphan's Home Cemetery - Hillsboro, Kansas

Salem Orphan's Home Cemetery, southeast of Hillsboro, Kansas, is a roadside field with at least 12 burials, though there may well be others which are not recorded. The Industrial School and Hygiene Home for the Friendless was chartered on September 15, 1890, as a co-operative venture local church members. It quickly grew, with many of the children coming from the eastern half of the country. They worked on the farm which surrounded the home.

In the early 1900s, there was less need for a cemetery and the home also cared for mentally ill or disabled persons. In May, 1915, the name was changed to Salem Home in 1915 and served as a nursing home.

Lightning struck the home on April 29, 1944. Everyone was safely evacuated, but the building was destroyed.

The cemetery has a row of children's graves as well as some adults.
