Sierra BBQ - Lenexa, Kansas
Sierra BBQ
Sierra BBQ - Lenexa, Kansas

Sierra BBQ opened on October 22, 2024 in the Lenexa, Kansas original location of the same owner's Sierra Grill. Both locations are worthy of a visit. They focus on carry out, delivery and catering, but I think the 50 seat barbecue restaurant will soon be a favorite neighborhood joint. At this time, their hours are somewhat limited, 11 AM to 7 PM Tuesday through Friday.

I've had an opportunity to dine here 4 times and have sampled pretty much the entire menu.

The sausage is my favorite meat. I liked it as it was served, without sauce, but enjoyed it even more with the mustard based Carolina BBQ sauce.

My other favorite meats are the smoked pork belly and the baby back ribs. The juicy smoked pork belly is wonderful! I cut it into small pieces so that I could savor every morsel.  The spare ribs are also good and I like them with the regular sauce, which is vinegar based and a little sweet.

The Kalua Pig is a fabulous sandwich. Pulled pork & pork belly with pineapple salsa on a brioche bun. I'm not a big pulled pork fan and hadn't tried theirs before the sandwich, but I enjoyed this pulled pork more than any I have had before. It is moist and has a good smoky flavor. The combination is great. It wouldn't have needed sauce, but I loved it even more with some of the house made habanero hot sauce.

I wouldn't say the prices are too expensive, but there are no cheap options. The least expensive meal or sandwich is the $13.99 Loaded Baked Potato Meal, which comes with the choice of pulled pork, brisket, turkey, ham, or sausage. We asked if ribs were an option and the cashier said it wasn't an option on the register, but they would do it. It was a generous serving of ribs with great flavor and texture. The potato could have used more cooking and loaded is only cheese, sour cream, butter, and green onions. I'm glad to report that the baked potato side ordered on a following visit was cooked just right.

Single meat sandwiches are $14.99 with the choice one side. For the same price you can also get the Small Smoked Chicken Platter, which is a leg quarter with two sides.

The chicken pieces are quite large and this is an excellent choice for someone who likes smoked dark meat. I like the strong smoky flavor, but my favorite part of BBQ chicken is usually the skin and this skin was so tough that it required sawing with a serrated knife and there was little flavor. They do not serve white meat.

The burnt ends and brisket are both very lean. I prefer some fat in these cuts of meat. They do pair well with the spicy BBQ sauce, which is similar to the regular, but a little less sweet and a little hotter. The spare ribs are good and I like them with the regular sauce, which is vinegar based and a little sweet.

Sierra Grill does not serve French fries at this time. The cheesy corn is my favorite side, followed by the baked potato, which is half of a large potato. The baked beans have less seasoning than I prefer, but I still enjoyed the bites which included BBQ meat. One bite of the slaw and two bites of the potato salad were enough and I did not take the rest home with me. The slaw was neither sweet or vinegary, it just tasted like cabbage. The large pieces of potato in the salad seemed far undercooked and it was lightly seasoned.

You order at the counter and the food is brought to your table. Every person at the counter has been friendly and ready to answer questions or make suggestions. They are good about refilling Coke products and have offered to go cups as well. They also serve 11 kinds of beer.

During my second visit there were (presumably house made) hot sauces next to the silverware, as well as two sizes of boxes for carry out. I took a small sample of each sauce home to taste later and liked the Chipotle Hot Sauce and Habanero Hot Sauce. The Fresno was kind of fruity. OK, but not one I would use again. None of them are excessively hot.

On our last visit the silverware was brought to us at the table. There was no sign of the sauces and they weren't offered, though I didn't ask if they are still available.
