St Martin's tower from US-54 when approaching Piqua from the east. St. Martin of Tours Parish in Piqua, Kansas was established in 1884, 3 years before the Diocese of Wichita. The present brick church building was dedicated November 12, 1922. Although regular mass is no longer celebrated at the beautiful Catholic Church, the building is still maintained and open to the public. Major exterior work was being done to Saint Martin's Church when I first visited Piqua in 2006. The photo at the bottom of this page was replaced by this new photo without blue tarp on the roof, when the work was completed in 2007. One of the few regular events at St Martin's is on Christmas Eve when Piqua residents and others returning to town for Christmas celebrate mass. In 2008 this mass was at 9PM. Call (620) 625-3235 to confirm the time this year and come early, the church will be packed! The interesting old St. Martin's Cemetery is located 200 yards behind St. Martin's church and includes a priests' mound.
