Barbara McCreery's Dioramas - Lucas, Kansas Barbara McCreery is a sequin diorama artist in Lucas, Kansas, the Grassroots art Capital of Kansas. She has a home studio which is open by appointment or open house during Fools-a-Palooza, the annual April 1st Lucas Art Day when many places are open, all within walking distance of each other. You can also find her work displayed for sale at Switchgrass, the art co-op which is just two blocks away. We visited the home studio during Fools-a-Palooza, the Lucas Art Day in 2023 and Barbara McCreery graciously showed us through her home, which is decorated in part with her art, as well as having some pieces which had just been completed and not moved to the gallery. There was a steady stream of visitors while we were there and one of her most recent pieces sold while we were there. Barbara describes her self as self-taught and late blooming. She began making dioramas from sequins and found objects in 2000 and has not been able to stop. She says that when she is working on a piece "all negative thoughts (which I have in great abundance) leave my mind. I think only of what I am making. I find this very therapeutic."
