Switchgrass - Lucas, Kansas Switchgrass is an art co-op with the work of 22 largely self taught artists in Lucas, Kansas, the Grassroots Art Capital of Kansas. The art cooperative gallery offers over 2000 pieces of original artwork for sale in a wide spectrum of forms: jewelry, wall art, sculptures, stained glass, stickers, shelf art, ornaments and more. The gallery is in a 100 year old post rock building which was once a bakery in downtown Lucas. Switchgrass moved into this building after their former location across the street. We visited Switchgrass during Fools-a-Palooza, the annual April 1st Lucas Art Day. Two art demonstrations were in progress: stained glass by Janell Flores and palm leaf weaving by wheat weaver Doris Johnson. I found a variety of art which I liked and many things which various friends would love. Art which I particularly liked included dioramas by Barbara McCreery, and stickers and notebooks by Jade Warden-Scott. In addition to being a gallery, Switchgrass is a thrift store, art supply and classroom. Free classes are offered for pre-school, elementary and teens.
