Wright Family Graves in Hard Rock Cemetery Frances Wright, Frank Wright, James W. Wright, Reverend Joseph Wright, William W. Wright Reverend Joseph Samuel Wright was born in Kentucky in 1819 and Frances Allred Wright was born in Overton County, Tennessee on March 1, 1834. They are the great-great-great-grandparents of President Barack Obama. Reverend Wright died in Hale, Kansas on April 29, 1894 and Frances died in Hale on May 25, 1918. The Wrights are buried in adjoining graves in the tiny Hard Rock Cemetery in Salt Creek Township of Chautauqua County in southeast Kansas. Hale is a ghost town, about 3 miles northwest of the cemetery. Reverend Wright's first wife was Sarah Ababiah Brown and they had 8 children together. Frances was Joseph's second wife and they had thirteen children together, including Margaret Belle Wright, who married Thomas Creekmore McCurry. The McCurrys are buried in nearby Peru, Kansas. Margaret and Thomas McCurry had seven children, including Leona Belle McCurry, who married Rolla Charles Payne. The Paynes are buried in Highland Cemetery in Winfield, Kansas. Leona and Rolla had three children, including Madelyn Lee "Toot" Payne who married Stanley Armour Dunham. Madelyn and Stanley had one child, Dr. Stanley Ann Dunham, who married Barack Hussein Obama, Sr. The Obamas had one child, Barack Hussein Obama, Jr., who became the 44th President of the United States on January 20, 2009. Madelyn, Stanley and Stanley Ann are all buried in Hawaii.
