William F. Schaeffler House Museum - Hillsboro, Kansas The William F. Schaeffler House Museum at Grand Avenue and Jefferson Street in Hillsboro, Kansas is a distinct contrast with the Mennonite Settlement Museum buildings a mile away. The Schaeffler House was constructed in 1909 by a prosperous Lutheran immigrants from Germany who founded the Schaeffler Mercantile Company. Hillsboro Museums operates both museums and tours of the Edwardian, Queen Anne style home is on the National Register of Historic Places and tours can be arranged by calling (620) 947-3775. Touring the Schaeffler House took us about a half hour. If you tour the museum complex as well, allow an additional hour. The 12 room house has an open stairway, stained glass windows, attractive woodwork, a round cupola and a carriage House, though the second building is not included in the tour. The large front porch really sets off the house with a gable and six fluted Ionic columns.
