Baxter Springs Sunflower Field - Baxter Springs, Kansas For several years, the City of Baxter Springs, Kansas has planted a sunflower field along Historic Route 66 to give folks a photo opportunity along The Route. It did not happen in 2020 or 2023, but they were planted in 2021 and the flowers were at peak bloom when these photos were taken on August 21. Sunflowers have been planted again in 2023 and we were told that they were starting to bloom on June 28. We were told that the flowers were larger in past years, but at least in 2021, they were smaller than the other public sunflowers we have found across Kansas. They were not quite knee high, but with a little creativity, you could still create a photo opportunity and this is the only public sunflower field we know of in the southeast corner of the state. The field is at the northeast corner of Baxter Springs, where historic Route 66 enters town, coming from the Rainbow Bridge.
