Monday
- February 20, 2023: I returned to Topeka to pick up the camera that
was repaired at Phototronic on Highway 24.
I
first stopped at Bradley's Corner Cafe to have a slice of pie. They normally
have a large selection of pies, but today there was only pumpkin. When
my slice was brought to the table, it looked rather sad. kind of shrunken.
The filling was less than half the height I expected. The taste was just
OK. The server obviously knew that it wasn't right. I was charged $2, rather
than the usual $4.29.
I
went by the Capitol building, to check on the demolition which has begun
on the 65 year old Docking Building (Kansas State Office Building) across
the street. It seems a shame that this building had such a short life.
Lunch
was a Coney dog and onion rings at Bobo's Drive In. Bobo's is a classic
old drive-in that has been operating in Topeka, Kansas since 1948, and
has been at this location on 10th Avenue since 1953. It was featured on
the Diners, Drive Ins and Dives show on the Food Network in December, 2007.
The
bun was toasted and the chili was the right texture with no beans. It was
seasoned as much as I would like. I should have asked for hot sauce.
The
batter on the onion rings was not what I remember. Similar in texture to
the coating on catfish, but with a different coating. Still it was very
good, the onion still was meaty, not limp from the frying.
Then
on to Gates Park where the new, electric mini train was being delivered
at Gage Park. The engine and most of the passenger cars were already unloaded,
but I watched the final one come off of the track. It looks nice and I
like that the first passenger car is accessible. It will be running this
spring.
