Thursday
- November 3, 2022: I'm off on an overnight trip to Wichita, Kansas.
The first stop was at Ty's Dinner on West 2nd Street, which has been reviewed
on our site since 2008. It had been about three years since it had been
updated. I dined at the counter and had a jalapeno cheeseburger with 1/2
order of Frings (basket of fries and onion rings).
The
Allen House in Wichita is the last of the Frank Lloyd Wright famous Prairie
Houses. It was built in 1915 for former Kansas Governor Henry Justin Allen
and his wife, Elsie. Photos are normally not permitted in the home, but
the Allen House Foundation agreed to permit photography for this website.
I joined a regularly scheduled tour and the docent explained to the tour
why I was being permitted to take photos.
I
drove north to Highland Cemetery and Old Mission Cemetery to photograph
a number of the more famous graves, including Sidney Toler who was a successful
actor, playwright, and theatre director. He was the second European American
actor to play the role of Charlie Chan on screen, appearing in 22 films
made between 1938 and 1946.
Other
graves photographed included James Patrick Masterson (Bat Masterson's brother),
William Coffin Coleman (Founder of the Coleman lantern company) and William
Mathewson (The first "Buffalo Bill").
After
some time along the Arkansas River near the Keeper
of the Plains, supper was at Doo-Dah Diner, which was featured on Diners,
Drive-Ins and Dives on the Food Network. I had a Monte Cristo, which is
a ham and cheese sandwich made with French toast.
I
spent the night at MainStay Suites Wichita Northeast.

Friday
- November 4, 2022: The day began with a visit to Mark Arts, a regional
arts hub which was founded in 1920. Right now they are hosting a national
watercolor exhibition.
Lunch
was at Bomber Burger on the south
side of Wichita, which is the number on listing on our Kansas
Best Burgers Page. I had a 3/4 pound cheeseburger with fresh cut fries.
Bomber Burger is cash only.
On
the drive home, I stopped at Grazing Plains Farm, which is a few miles
east of Newton, Kansas. The farm has its own dairy store, a closet sized
room with a refrigerator and freezer where they sell cheeses and raw milk.
It is not staffed, so customers calculate the the amount owned and leave
the cash in a sealed metal milk can. I bought elbing cheese, fromage blanc
(cheese spread), farmstead cheese, havarti, cheddar, and cheddar curds.
As of this writing the cheddar is the only one I have tried and is quite
mild.
