- September 1, 2017: We are on a week long trip to Mackinac Island
and Mackinaw City, Michigan to take photos and visit attractions for our
sister site www.MightyMac.org.
We arrived on Mackinac Island last night. Highlights of this day included
a bicycle around the island where automobiles are banned and an evening
sip 'n sale cruise on the Isle Royale Queen III. My step daughter live
streamed the cruise on our Facebook
Page.

- September 4, 2017: This is the 5th day of our trip to the Straits
of Mackinac in Michigan. The trip was scheduled to include Labor Day, because
that is the one day of the year that people can walk across the 5 mile
long Mackinac Bridge. This is the 60th year of the walk. This time, my
step daughter lived streamed the walk, while she and I provided a commentary.
At the peak, nearly 900 people were watching the live stream at the same
time. More photos
of the 2017 Mackinac Bridge Walk. |

- September 5, 2017: This was the last full day of our Michigan trip
and we drove north 55 miles to Sault Ste Marie. Highlights of the day included
a boat cruise tour which went through the Soo Locks & past the Essar
Steel Algoma steelworks, a drive over the International Bridge to Sault
Ste Marie, Ontario, Canada and a visit to the Sault Ste. Marie Canal National
Historic Site where it we were able to walk around and across the Canadian
Soo Lock. |

- September 16, 2017: At mid day we visited the 42nd annual Friends
of Shawnee Town Arts & Crafts Fair & Fall Festival. There were
over 100 under booths, but it appeared that many of the exhibitors who
are local and don't do many arts and crafts exhibits. The food vendors
were mostly snack items. For lunch, a couple of community organizations
were selling hot dogs & hamburgers and one other vendor had about 4
or 5 Mexican items.
For
supper, we revisited Sierra Grill in Lenexa. It opened at the beginning
of the summer and we first tried them in late June. We liked this place
quite a bit, but it has very limited hours and it hasn't been easy to get
back there again. We sampled pork chops, beef tenderloin and beef short
rib. All were good!
I
think we need to visit Sierra Grill one more time, checking out the lunch
menu. While it will not make our list of Unique
Kansas Restaurants, it will join the other restaurants
work visiting at the bottom of that page.

- September 19, 2017: I had lunch at Sam's
Tastee Treat in Olathe, Kansas. It had been over a year since my
last visit to Sam's and its review needs updating. Sam's has also been
offered for sale, for over 2 years and I needed to confirm that no changes
had been made and update the menu.
No
changes
had been made. Sam's Tastee Treat is more about tradition than the food,
which is only average drive in fare. It started as a Tastee Freeze in 1963,
but has been run by its current owners, Sueko "Sam" and Hugh Silvernale
since the mid 1990s.

- September 21, 2017: I had lunch at K-Macho's Mexican Grill and Cantina
on Olathe, Kansas. I dined there once when it first opened, but that had
been several years. The very large dinning room was nearly full, but service
was still quick and the Jalapenos Rellenos (peppers stuffed with cream
cheese, lightly battered and fried) and Relleno De Pollo (roasted poblano
pepper stuffed with grilled chicken and Monterrey jack cheese topped with
ranchera sauce) were both very good. |

- September 22, 2017: I drove to Overland Park to update our review
of Bee Cee's Authentic Barbecue.
It had been nearly 2 years since the last time I dined there and I learned
that it had closed shortly after that visit.
So
I went to Mai Thai Restaurant a little over a mile away. It had been several
years since the last time I was there. Mai Thai was packed when I walked
in, but I was quickly seated. My service was excellent, but a nearby table
with 4 women who were there ahead of me had to ask for soup sometime after
I received mine. Then they had to ask about their main courses after mine
came. One also had to get silverware from another table.
My
food was quite good, better than I remember. I will revisit it soon to
consider it for our Overland Park
Restaurant guide.

- September 25, 2017: Tonight I had supper at Wai-Wai
Thai Place Express in Overland Park. It had been 3 years since
I last dined there and its review needed an update. I was surprised to
learn that the menu had no changes in that period of time, except for the
price of two of the items. The Spicy Basil Wings and Thai Place Shrimp
were both very good. More complex and interesting than the dishes at many
of the Thai restaurants in the area. |

- September 26, 2017: I had a second meal at Mai Thai Restaurant in
Overland Park. Neither the service or the food was quite as good as it
was last week, but both were within acceptable limits. Today I had the
red curry, which was OK, but nothing special. The soup was chicken quinoa
(I think) and no treat at all. A listing of this restaurant has been added
to our Overland Park Restaurant
Guide.

- September 29, 2017: At lunch I had my first meal at Hawg Jaw Que
& Brew. The BBQ restaurant was in Riverside, Missouri for 5 years,
but moved to its present location in North Kansas City, Missouri in February
of this year. The exterior is very plain, but the split level interior,
with counter and beverage on the upper level and tables on the lower level
is fairly attractive.
I
ordered the Hawg Trough Sampler which combines a sample of brisket, burnt
ends, pulled pork, ham, turkey, smoked sausage, ribs and the choice of
1 small side for $17.99. The best meats were the burnt ends, pulled pork
and ham, while the sausage had little flavor. The French fries are battered,
nothing special.
There
are three BBQ sauces, all of them fairly sweet, plus smoked ketchup.
