Sunday
- September 8, 2018: We lunch at Char
Bar in Kansas City, Missouri. The BBQ restaurant has a review on our
Kansas
City BBQ Restaurant Guide, but we had not been there since 2015. As
we were driving there, Westport Road was closed and we learned that it
was the annual Westport Art Fair weekend. The down side to that was that
Char Bar's free parking had been bought up by the festival and we had to
pay $10 to park.
The
dinning room looked little changed in 3 years and the items I liked before
seemed to still be on the menu. We sampled, pork ribs, burt ends, chicken
wings, brisket, fries, baked beans and a burnt pudding dessert. All of
the items were good, but the ribs and burnt ends were the standouts. Oddly
the burnt ends were not that good, reheated at home a couple of days later.
I
stopped by the Lenexa Spinach Festival at Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park in Lenexa
in the afternoon. Due to rainy weather, the various booths and exhibitors
had moved to a parking lot in another part of the park. This was the first
time I had been to this one day festival, so I don't know if many exhibitors
had failed to show because of the weather, but there really wasn't much
there. There were more people in the part participating in the Pokemon
Go Community Day event, then at the festival.

- September 11, 2018: At lunch time, I went to Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que
in Olathe. Joe's recently introduced a new specialty sandwich, The Rocket
Pig (Pulled pork tossed in a sweet-hot BBQ glaze, bacon, pepper jack, BBQ
mayo & fried jalapenos). This sandwich didn't look very attractive
and while the description sounded very flavorful, I actually found it bland.
We
added a new page devoted to the hand crafted folk art concrete and wire
gravestones which have been places on unmarked graves in City
Cemetery in Hoisington, Kansas. They were created by local grassroots
artist, Phil Webb.

- September 15, 2018: My favorite seafood restaurant in the Kansas
City area has changed its name and menu, so we had lunch at Jarocho
Authentic Mexican Seafood in Kansas City, Kansas. The former name had
been Jarocho Pescados Y Mariscos and I suspect I wasn't the only customer
who had trouble pronouncing it.
We
had fried charales as appetizer. They were small, whole, head on smelt
which had been deep fried. I was a little skeptical of having smelt without
the head and guts removed, but thoroughly enjoyed them. I had the Grilled
fish filet topped with seafood cream sauce of shrimp, octopus, and crab.
It was good, but not as spectacular as I remembered. Linda had an appetizer
as her entree, Garlic Langostines, which were quite tasty.
We
added a new page devoted to the Rediscover
Pluto Miniature Golf Course in Burdett, Kansas. The reason the miniature
golf course is now devoted to Pluto is because Clyde Tombaugh, who discovered
Pluto in 1930, spent his teen years on a farm near Burdett and graduated
from Burdett High School.

- September 18, 2018: For lunch, I went to a new restaurant on the
west side of Olathe, BBs Grill and Bar, which recently moved into the location
which had been long occupied by Fred
P. Ott's. Is the 2nd location for BBs, which is also in Spring Hill.
The dinning room has had some badly needed remodeling. The Ott's furniture
had been falling apart.
I
had the pork tenderloin, which had been significantly over cooked. The
party at the next table returned two dishes to the kitchen and I overheard
the server saying that at least for that shift, they have young, inexperienced
chefs.

- September 22, 2018: We drove to Lee's Summit, Missouri to see if
Jazzy B's Diner should be added to our Kansas
City BBQ Restaurants Guide. The restaurant started several year's ago
as Jazzy B's Food Truck and opend at this location in October 2016. It
is a BBQ restaurant with southern influences.
We
tried a wide range of the menu, taking a lot of uneaten food home with
us: shrimp Po'boy, crab balls, armadilla eggs, brisket, sausage, baby back
ribs, garlic cheesy corn, fries, cole slaw and blue cheese potato salad.
We enjoyed the vast majority of the food, particularly the cheesy corn,
sausage and ribs. The blue cheese potato salad was the only thing we didn't
eat much of or take home. There was a LOT od garlic in the cheesy corn
and I really enjoyed that.

- September 24, 2018: I went to lunch at the new Wahlburgers in Olathe
and was pleased to learn that they don't actually open until tomorrow and
everything but alcohol is on the house today. This is their first Kansas
location and less than a hundred yards from what was the first 5 Guys west
of the Mississippi River.
I
ordered onion straws and the O.F.D. burger, a 1/2 lb burger made with Swiss
cheese, bacon, sautéed mushrooms & house made tomato jam.
often carry a book and started reading.
The
time dragged on and on and at least where I sat, the room was very cold.
They really weren't that busy, but I understood it was a training day and
didn't say a word, until people at the next table, who came in maybe 20
minutes after me, got their food.
It
turned out the kitchen had lost my order and the server didn't notice.
A new order was put in and the manager came by to apologize. The food came
46 minutes after my order was placed. The burger was OK, the onion straws
had a seasoning that I wouldn't have picked.
When
the bill came, I was charged for two meals, the one that didn't come and
the one that did, though it was then zeroed out because it was a training
day.
We
updated our page devoted to Nelson's Landing
in Leonardville, Kansas.

- September 25, 2018: My day job took me to south Overland Park, so
I decided to have lunch at Smokeys On The Blvd BBQ on South Metcalf, only
to find the building was vacant and there no sign. After researching on
my phone, I discovered that they have a new location at Antioch and 135th
Street and headed there.
Pricing
has crept up, but the menu seemed otherwise unchanged. The BBQ egg rolls
were as good as always, but had jumped from 2/$4.99 to 2/7.99!
We
added a new page about Saint
Joseph Catholic Church in downtown Topeka, Kansas.
