Sunday
- December 2, 2018: We drove to Topeka to check on Christmas light
displays. Dean Wilson joined in making the first pass, to update our Topeka
Christmas Light Tour. On our way to pick him up, we happened to pass
a nice display based on the 1983 movie "Christmas Story," with representations
of several of the iconic scenes from the movie. We returned at the end
of the evening to get photos after dark.
As
we waiting for the evening to turn darker, we checked out AJ's NY Pizzeria
in Topeka. This pizza place has been getting good comments online and also
has a location in Manhattan, Kansas. We bought the large, thin crust
pizza by the slice. Pretty good, but not really a candidate for our Unique
Kansas Restaurant Page.
The
photo at the right shows the little street signs are used to designate
which table orders go to at AJ's NY Pizzeria.
With
it now dark enough to photograph displays, we proceeded to check out the
displays on our tour. One nice surprise was that the large Croco Road Christmas
Display which was not up when we checked in 2017, is back in 2018.

Friday
- December 9, 2018: We continue to verify Christmas Light decorations
for our Johnson County Christmas
Light Tour and make changes daily. Today I checked a hone in south
Olathe which has a display based on the 1983 movie "Christmas Story."
This one is at a much larger home than the one we saw week ago in
Topeka and the combination of the larger yard and the house being set back
much farther from the street is keeping it from getting on our tour. But
the owner upgrades this display each year and we will keep an eye on it
going forward.

Grille in Fort Scott, Kansas following last month's revisit.

Thursday
- December 13, 2018: While checking on light displays for the our Johnson
County Christmas Light Tour, this evening, we stopped for dinner at
Fred P. Otts in Overland Park. It is listed on our Overland
Park Restaurant Guide and it had been nearly 3 years since we last
investigated it. The food is still much the same, but I miss the condiment
bar which used to be one of their signature features.

Friday
- December 21, 2018: At lunch I checked out Dub V's across from the
Johnson County Courthouse in downtown Olathe, Kansas. The small bar and
deli is a hangout for Kansas State University fans and I had read some
good things about the food. I had "The OG," a large burger with garlic
aioli, grilled onions, cheddar, lettuce & tomato for $8.49. Good as
that sounds, the burger wasn't very juicy and I would rank it only average.
The $1 seasoned French fries were quite good and there are several other
items on the menu which look interesting, so I will definitely be back.

- December 23, 2018: While checking on light displays for the our Johnson
County Christmas Light Tour, this evening, we stopped for dinner at
Smokey's BBQ on the BLVD in south Overland Park. I've like this restaurant
for years and followed them to this location from another that was farther
south on Metcalf. I had just the BBQ egg rolls appetizer, which I think
is wonderful and just the right size when I do not have a big appetite.
Linda got a half chicken and onion rings. The 1/2 smoked chicken is typical
of area BBQ restaurants and the onion rings were quite good.
Added
a new page devoted to Gerth Cabin & Wagon
Bridge in Greeley, Kansas.

Monday
- December 24, 2018: The final restaurant investigated for 2018 was
Wyandot
Barbeque 2 in Overland Park, Kansas, Kansas. The restaurant is in a
somewhat run down building which appears to have one housed a Pizza Hut,
but I have enjoyed the food here for over 30 years and it has listing in
both our Kansas City Barbecue Restaurant Guide and Overland Park Restaurant
Guide.
It
had been a over a year since my last time here and I went with my usual,
which allows me to try a number of meats, the generous mixed plate of beef,
ham, ribs and fries for only $11. It is a generous serving and I usually
have meat to take home. All of the meats were good and the fires were well
prepared, though only from frozen. I am usually not a fan of ham at BBQ
restaurants, but this has smoke and is somewhat juicy. A real treat!
