Dixie Court Display - Lansas City, Kansas
Sunday - December 3, 2023: We made our first trip to Topeka to check on displays for our Topeka Christmas Light Display Tour. Most of last year's displays are back and we found that two long running displays which had not gone up in 2022 are back this year. We also checked on some new leads and a large display of inflatable Christmas items at 2640 SE 45th Street.

I was surprised and delighted to find out that the Kingman Christmas Village in north Topeka is up. It is a large display with many hand made items and 30,000 lights. Kenny and Virginia Kingman, who created the display over 30 years, passed away after setting up the 2022 display and I was afraid it was over.

We also checked on the reopened Speck's Bar & Grill. Specks began as the Seabrook Tavern in 1957 and had a long tradition of serving burgers up 3 lbs. It closed in June, but was purchased and reopened a few months later. It is now open under the same name and we several long time favorite items (such as the huge burger) are still on the menu.

The pork tenderloin was quite good and I had one of my long time favorite items, the Bomber Hot Dog with Swiss cheese, jalapeno peppers, sauerkraut and onions. the cheese wasn't melted and it seemed to be mostly sauerkraut. They are doing well enough that we will be trying them again.

Thursday - December 7, 2023: We have been continuing to check on Johnson County Christmas displays daily, but tonight we visited Lawrence to check on homes for the Lawrence Christmas Display Tour this evening. We found nice new displays on Coneflower Court, Easy Street, and Andover Street.

On our way back home we discovered that the Lindeen Family Christmas Display in Eudora, which wasn't up when checked earlier this season, was up and looking good.

We also stopped at Cedar Creek in northwest Olathe to check out a large new display. On the way we discovered an additional display at Shadow Glen Golf Club.

Thursday - December 14, 2023: While checking on Christmas displays in Olathe, we paid a revisit to Crazy Good Eats, a BBQ restaurant which we hadn't been back to for several years. The small restaurant has significantly remodeled. The large menu sign no longer hangs at the entrance and the bar has been expanded and become a bit of a local hangout.

The "big smoked chicken" lived up to its name, a really large serving. It had a good flavor from the smoking and had been nicely finished in the deep fryer. The corn bread and onion straws were good as well.

Sunday - December 17, 2023: Checking on Christmas Light Displays is starting to wind down. Frankly, the first dozen nights we visit displays each year are the most fun and going out loses a little of the luster when I go out for the 20th night.

Tonight we visited a display in Mission which is spread over two adjacent homes in a culdesac. It is almost enough to be added to our tours, but it is 4 miles from the closest other special display and I feel it is too much additional driving.

We also checked a huge display in Kansas City, Kansas near Edwardsville, which is spread over a big corner lot on Dixie Court. It was added to our Bonner Springs / Edwardsville Christmas Light Tour.

Thursday - December 21, 2023: We made our final trip checking on Christmas Displays for this year's season with stops in Eudora, Bonner Springs and and Edwardsville. We found a second display on our way to checking out the one in Eudora.

We had supper at Mass Street Fish House. The Low Tide (four oysters, 1/2 lb cocktail shrimp, 1/2 snow crab) was very nice.
