Battle Canyon - Scott City, Kansas
Saturday - January 7, 2017: We traveled to Lawrence for the KU vs Texas Tech men's Big 12 basketball game, perhaps the only game we will get to this season. Tech gave the Jayhawks some trouble early, but the Hawks had a comfortable lead late in the game. It was the Jayhawks' 2200th win.

Sunday - January 8, 2017: I drove to the Armordale neighborhood of Kansas City, Kansas to revisit two restaurants which are just a couple of blocks apart. El Pollo Rey serves only three dishes: a half chicken, a whole chicken or chicken wings. Served with tortillas, rice, salsa & beans, a meal is $6.75. Today I got the whole chicken to go, which we reheated for supper later in the day. The chicken is not as good reheated. I was surprised at how small the sides were. They are a bit small for an individual meal and the whole chicken came with the same size sides.

I drove back up the street to have lunch at Jarocho Pescados Y Mariscos, my favorite seafood restaurant in Kansas City. On Sunday, they have a different brunch menu. For $23.95 there is an all you can eat oyster & seafood bar plus one item made to order from the brunch menu. Add bottomless mimosa, bloody mary, margarita, red and white sangria for only $13.95. It was good, but I prefer ordering off the menu.

Tuesday - January 10, 2017: Updated the review of the Crawford County Historical Museum in Pittsburg, Kansas. The museum has one of the largest collections of artifacts, historical displays and educational material in Southeast Kansas.

Thursday - January 12, 2017: We had supper at Blind Box BBQ in Shawnee, Kansas. It had been about a half year since our last visit to this year and a half old barbeque restaurant and I am surprised to see that the prices are still virtually unchanged. The service was a bit off, but the food was still very good.

I particularly liked the BBQ street corn, which was even better than in our previous visits.

Friday - January 13, 2017: Our review of Smokin' Joe's BBQ in Olathe, Kansas has been updated with the new menu board which recently replaced the 1980s menu board behind the counter. Smokin' Joe's BBQ - Olathe, Kansas Smokin' Joe's BBQ

Saturday - January 14, 2017: Added a new page devoted to historic Topeka Cemetery in Topeka, Kansas.

Sunday - January 15, 2017: Restaurant week continues through next Sunday in the Kansas City metro area. There was a good crowd at Porto Do Sul in Overland Park tonight, despite the Chief's playoff game at the same time. Porto Do Sul is the only Brazilian restaurant on the Kansas side of the metro area.

Added a new page devoted to Cottonwood Ranch near Studley, Kansas.

Monday - January 16, 2017: We added a new page devoted to Battle Canyon in Scott County, Kansas, which was the site of the Battle of Punished Woman's Fork, the last encounter between Native Americans and United States Troops in the State of Kansas.

For lunch, we revisited Mom's Kitchen in Olathe, Kansas. Quick, with generous portions and low prices. No real standout dishes, but I've never had poor food here.

Tuesday - January 17, 2017: We added a new page devoted to the Dane G. Hansen Memorial Museum in Logan, Kansas, which is more of a community resource than a museum that will attract visitors. The Dane G. Hansen Foundation awards nearly 300 renewable college scholarships each year, ranging from $4,000-10,000.

Thursday - January 19, 2017: For lunch, I made my more or less annual visit to Fred P. Ott's Bar & Grill in Olathe, Kansas to update its listing on our Olathe Restaurant Guide. The biggest change since my last visit is the elimination of the condiment bar which was a signature offering for many years. I learned that it has been removed at all of the Ott's locations.

Today I had the hand breaded pork tenderloin, which was large and good. For $9.49 it comes with one side and the onion rings were very good. Probably the best in Olathe.

Saturday - January 21, 2017: Started the day with a visit to KC Classic Auto Sales & Museum in Lenexa. The large garage displays and sells over 50 classic or muscle cars.

Had a great chicken fried steak sandwich with fresh cut Suzie Q's at Suzie Q's in Kansas City, Kansas today. It is a tremendous value at $7.50. The menu and prices are unchanged from last March, though the restaurant has slightly expanded winter hours until April 21.

We added a new page, reviewing Jiffy Burger in Smith Center, Kansas, which we visited last September. The 50's themed burger stand is 20 years old. The dinning room is decorated with wall displays devoted to 1950's stars. Nearly half of the restaurant is devoted to Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe.

Monday - January 22, 2017: We had supper at C. Frogs, the upscale BBQ & steak house which moved in next to Standees in Prairie Village. At right, are two of the appetizers: Bacon wrapped shrimp in Louisiana butter sauce with broiled bleu cheese; Chicken fried oysters with red pepper jam on roasted creamed corn with smoked bacon.

C. Frogs uses Hillsdale Bank Barbecue sauce.

Tuesday - January 24, 2017: Added new pages devoted to the American Royal World Series of Barbecue in Kansas City, Kansas and historic Jewell County Jail in Mankato, Kansas.

Sunday - January 29, 2017: Many and Nicholas joined us on our second visit to C. Frogs in Prairie Village. At Sunday brunch, for $15.95 you select one breakfast entree from a selection of 13, plus all that you wish from a cold buffet with shrimp, bruschetta, cheeses, smoked salmon, salads, fruits, pastries, grilled vegetables, sausages, pates and terrines.
